Alon Ostapenko reaches the round of 16 of the Australian Open for the first time

Ostapneko (WTA 17th) beat Ukrainian Katerina Baindla (WTA 95th) 6-3, 6-0 in the third round match.

In the first set, the Latvian tennis player took the lead with 4-1 and, despite the fact that her opponent was able to win two more games, Ostapenko protected her advantage and won the first set, while in the second set, Ostapenko played convincingly and won without losing a single game.

Ostapenko, who is seeded 17th in the tournament, has played with Baindla three times so far and has always conceded. It was Baindla, who was previously known by the last name Kozlova, in 2018, in the first round of the French Open, she took away Ostapenko’s champion powers. Also, the Ukrainian was superior in 2014 in the ITF competition in Italy and in 2016 in the second round of the Hertogenbosch WTA “International” tournament.

It has already been reported that the Latvian tennis player defeated the Ukrainian Dayana Jastremska (WTA 101.) in the first round with 6-4, 6-2, and in the second round with 7-6 (7:5), 5-7, 6-0 she beat the Hungarian tennis player Anna Bondaru (WTA 81.). Baindla, on the other hand, won the neutral athlete Kamilla Rahimova (WTA 110) 7-5, 6-7 (8:10), 6-1 in the first round match, and beat the neutral athlete Kamilla Rahimova (WTA 110) in the second round 6-1, 7-6 (7:4) Katie McNally (WTA 94) from USA.

In the season opener, Ostapenko and Baindla participated in two WTA 500 tournaments in Adelaide, both winning one match in three matches.

Ostapenko will meet seventh-seeded Koko Goff (WTA 7th) from the USA in the fourth round or round of 16.

Reaching the fourth round is Ostapenko’s best singles achievement at the Australian Open. She had previously failed to make it past the third round.

The first “Grand Slam” tournament of the 2023 season will be held in Melbourne on the hard surface until January 29.
