World Cup 2022: Dietmar Hamann dismantles the DFB, Flick and the national team – FOOTBALL

While the World Cup is entering the knockout phase with the first round of sixteen games, the German players are already back home after less than two weeks of the tournament in Qatar.

After the embarrassing elimination of the preliminary round, there was great criticism from all sides. Dietmar Hamann (49) finds perhaps the clearest words so far, and in his column on “Sky” he makes a huge sweep.

“It cannot and must not continue in this constellation. National coach Hansi Flick had 16 months to form a team. He didn’t succeed,” writes Hamann.

And further: “Team means solidarity. Team means having respect for each other. Team means walking through fire for the teammate. There was no sign of that in Qatar. And when I hear the comments afterwards: Excuses, excuses, excuses!”

No pity! No mercy!

“The truth is different”

Hamann criticizes the appearance and attitude of the national players in equal measure: “I had the feeling that the German team was an oasis of well-being. Players have been in their bubbles listening to how good they are. But the truth is different.”

Also the personnel decision not to nominate BVB star Mats Hummels (33) (“The question arises: why didn’t he go along? One who recognizes developments and trends. Instead, harmony was put above everything, but with harmony alone you don’t win anything.”) criticizes Hamann.

“Flick had an outstanding six months in Munich, then wanted to join the DFB and failed miserably. So I don’t really know what there is to discuss. Failures must not be tolerated and if we claim to be better, then I have to take responsibility as a manager,” Hamann demands the resignation of our national coach.

And also off the field, the DFB would have given a devastating picture in the opinion of the 59-time national player. “The way we sold ourselves as a nation and association in the public image was pathetic,” writes Hamann and then lashes out once again: “The whole world is laughing at us. All other nations have decided: if there are sanctions, we cannot wear the One Love armband. What do we do? We’re trying to take on FIFA, but we knew in advance who would have the upper hand. What the DFB leadership allowed itself to do in this case could not be surpassed in terms of naivety.

One thing is clear: the surprisingly early end of the World Cup should change football in Germany a year and a half before the home European Championship. It remains to be seen to what extent these changes will also affect individuals …
