Will there soon be a top chess player from Germany? 18-year-old Vincent Keymer has some landmark weeks ahead of him. In any case, the pressure to become the new face of an entire sport is already there.

Shortly before what is probably the most important week of his career to date, Vincent Keymer sends a friendly greeting from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. At least indirectly. In fact, Germany’s best chess player is sitting in front of a webcam at home in Saulheim, near Mainz, and has virtually entered the famous setting. Also, Keymer’s upcoming travel destinations are not in California, but in Kazakhstan, the Netherlands and the Rhineland. There he has to face sporting tests at the very highest level – and his performance should offer reliable answers to the question of what level Vincent Keymer has meanwhile reached on his remarkable journey to the top of the international league.
