Uni stands without doubts in Guipúscoa (53-68)

Uni Girona had no room for error if they wanted to stay at the top of the category, and they have left no room for doubt. Bernat Canut’s have prevailed over IDK Euskotren (53-68), in a match in which they have maintained dominance at all times and with a partially decisive 7-21 in the second quarter that has allowed them to gain momentum and leave 15 in the final score.

The start of the match was quite a declaration of intent by the Girona girls. After opening the Etxarri can, in just the first two minutes of the game the Girona players already sealed a partial start of 0-10. Araujo tried to stop IDK’s reaction with a block that ended with Drammeh’s three-pointer (14-18), but the home team’s response came shortly after. Maria España scored two baskets in a row to stay only 3 points behind and close the first quarter with a 20-25 lead.

The local momentum, however, would not last long. Uni Girona, with one more march, ruled, once again, an initial partial 0-11 in the second quarter, until Muguruza called timeouts. Yurena Diaz broke Girona’s dominance with a free throw, but Cornelius didn’t have time to breathe, with two baskets that made it 21-38. Taking advantage of rival turnovers and with a very good defensive work, the Girona girls have kept the locals on the ropes, allowing them to score only 7 points in the entire second quarter.

An erratic and more discreet third period, in terms of scoring, followed the script of the first half, with a clear Girona dominance that led them to reach the maximum advantage of the match, with a 23-point gap (33-56 with the shots pounds of Labuckiene). The last quarter was used to finish rounding the score, with a remarkable performance by Rebeka Gardner as throughout the match, and take the match with a final result of 53-68.

With the victory, the Girona team remain at the top of the standings, sharing the lead – with 21 points, 9 wins and 3 losses – with Valencia, after Barça lost yesterday against Perfumerías Avenida (67-54).
