towards a change of format for the 2026 World Cup?

Zapping Our Mondial EXCLUDED: Jonathan Clauss’ “Little Brother” interview!

While the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will end on Sunday after the final between Argentina and France, Gianni Infantino is already planning for the 2026 World Cup which will take place in the United States in Canada and Mexico. As a reminder, this will be the first time in history that the competition takes place with 48 teams, which obviously means more matches and a new format. If for the moment FIFA had decided that there would be 16 groups of 3 teams during the group stages, the President of FIFA has just announced that this format was not final and that it would be re-examined in the next weeks :

“Here (in Qatar), the groups of four have been absolutely incredible until the last minute of every game. We have to reconsider that, at least re-discuss the format, if it’s 16 groups of three, or 12 groups of four. … That will be on the agenda for the next few weeks.”

If the format of 12 groups of four teams is retained, there will therefore be two qualified per pool (24 teams), plus the eight best third, which would therefore make 32 teams qualified for the second round. The nations would therefore play in the round of 16, a first in the history of the World Cup.
