Mavericks at the Nuggets prediction

After blowing out the suns last night, the Mavericks (11-11 SU, 6-16 ATS, 13-9 O/U) travel to the Mile High City to meet the Nuggets (13-9 SU, 11-11 ATS, 10-12 O/U).

Can you tell I like targeting the first quarters? I played the Warriors 1Q yesterday and lost after the Pacers had an unexpectedly strong start, but I’m going back to the well today and betting on the nuggets early. Denver racks up tons of points in the first quarter. They are second in the league and second on net with over 32 points per first quarter. The Nuggets also have the residual advantage over the Mavs, who played last night and had to travel to Denver. Finally, Denver wasn’t ready to play in the last two games, eventually losing to the Hawks and Pelicans. I’m expecting a much more engaged group from the start tonight.

SELECT: Nuggets 1Q ML

Pistons at Heat Prediction

After a heavy loss yesterday on the way to an exhausted Grizzlies team, the Heat (10-13 SU, 8-14-1 ATS, 11-11-1 O/U) return home to take on the Detroit Pistons ( 7-18 SU, 12-11-2 ATS, 14-11 O/U) at the FTX Arena.

Despite playing and traveling back-to-back last night, this feels like a good rebound point for the Heat tonight. All five starters played well for Miami, finishing in double figures, but the bench was horrible. Four players came off the bench last night, totaling 11 points and zero assists. The Heat was also battered in color, being outplayed by Memphis 64-24. And remember, the Grizzlies were without Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, Jaren Jackson Jr. and John Konchar, meaning the performance came from the Memphis B-Team.

Knowing what we know about “heat culture,” I can’t imagine achievement suiting anyone. I’m expecting a much more focused Miami team tonight, ready to avenge that loss to a not-so-great Pistons roster. I like how Heat covers the whole game and – spoiler alert! — I also like it when they start quickly in the quarter.

PICK: Heat -8.5
