(ANSA) – ROME, DECEMBER 15 – “I am very satisfied with the opinion of the advocate general of the EU Court, because it is perfectly in line with what our Federation and UEFA have maintained since the announcement of the so-called Superleague. The sports system, both European and global, cannot disregard the recognition of the international organizations UEFA and FIFA and it is in this context that internal democracy, the pyramid organizational model and sporting merit are promoted”. Thus the president of the FIGC, Gabriele Gravina. “Trusting in the same approach also in the Court’s ruling, I believe that all the members of the family of European and world football come together to overcome the contingent difficulties and to develop football at all levels,” he adds. In the late morning, UEFA also welcomed the opinion expressed by the EU Advocate General, Athanasios Rantos, in reference to the matter. In the pronouncement, Rantos recommended a ruling by the EU Court of Justice in support of the central mission of governing European football, protecting the pyramid and developing the game across Europe. “The FIFA and UEFA rules – Rantos stated in the document – which subject any new football competition to prior authorization, are compatible with EU law. The Super League is free to organize its own independent football competition outside outside the UEFA and FIFA ecosystem – it reads – but cannot, however, parallel to the creation of this competition, continue to participate in competitions organized by FIFA and UEFA without the prior authorization of these federations”.
