The former teammate of Porzingis retires at the age of 22 because he no longer loves the game

Terry posted a statement on his Instagram account, in which he does not hide that it is very difficult to announce and very emotional to write: “Today I decided to let go of the game that has formed a large part of my identity. The one who has guided my path since I took my first steps,” the statement read.

Terry touches on the topic that sport has been a very serious obstacle to his mental health: “While I have achieved great success, created unforgettable memories and made friends for life… I also experienced my darkest times. I got to a point where I stopped developing myself and started destroying myself. Where I began to belittle and question my worth, far more than those around me could ever notice or imagine.”

Also, the 22-year-old former athlete reveals that anxiety affected him physically and made his love for this sport fade: “Intrusive thoughts, waking up in the morning with nausea, difficulty breathing normally, because the feeling that a stone with such a weight that I cannot carry , would be thrown on the chest. That’s just a short description of the anxiety this sport has caused me. I’m grateful for everyone who opened up to me, but I can’t continue this fight any longer for something I don’t love anymore,” says Tyrell Terry.

Tyrell Terry was drafted in the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 2020, when they were selected in the second round, with the overall number 31 (the first pick of the second round) by the Dallas Mavericks, who at that time were also represented by the Latvian Kristaps Porzingis. Before that, Terry achieved record high scores in basketball IQ tests for various NBA teams. He began his university studies at the prestigious (especially in the field of education) Stanford University, where he studied with commendable success, but after one year he decided to apply for the NBA draft. Before that, he also represented the USA U-18 national team in the famous Albert Schweitzer tournament in Germany.

However, Terry’s NBA career did not work out, he played only 11 matches for the “Mavericks”, in which he was on the court a little more than five minutes on average, and spent most of it in the NBA G-League. In November 2021, the Dallas club broke his contract with him and he joined the Memphis “Grizzlies” system, where he played in two games with a total of three minutes of playing time in the big team. It is interesting that, being part of both teams, he was mostly sent to the same farm club – Memphis “Hustle”. This summer, the Grizzlies decided not to continue cooperation with the 188-centimeter defender.
