Terni, major sporting events account for 10% of the city’s GDP – Corriere dell’Umbria

Reception of thousands of insiders; tourism; promotion of the area. These are the voices that make theorganization of major sporting events one of the driving forces behind the development of territory of Terniwhose tourist vocation does not go beyond waterfall marmore and little else.

Conversely, for some years now, the city of steel has become a reference point for various sports (fencing, archery, rowing, table tennis), which can boast systems of absolute level, but also running, cycling outdoor sportthanks to the geographical-environmental peculiarities of the territory.

“Each initiative moves an average of 500 people – revealed the city councilor allo sport and al turismoproxies closely connected as never before, Elena Proietti – positively affecting about 10% of the gross domestic product”. And the 500 people mentioned above certainly constitute an average given that only the arrival of the stage of Tyrrhenian-Adriatic of people it moved in the order of 900 units.

So imagine what will happen with the departure of the stage of the Giro d’Italianext Saturday 13 May 2023. It will be a party for the whole city so much so that – as Elena Proietti reveals again – “A hundred days before departure the fountains will be painted pink. Then there are all the collateral activities such as the award for the best staging in the city, awards for schools and millions and millions of TV viewers, who will follow the race from all over the world”. The Giro, as the councilor still recalls, “returns to Terni exactly 28 years later. An event of international scope that brings with it considerable visibility”.

During 2023, then, will also open the PalaTerniwhich will be managed by the patron of Ternana, Stefano Bandecchi, ready to invest 5 million and 400 thousand euros for the next 27 years. While waiting for the agreement, already found with the builder Salini, to be formalized also by the Municipality, which in any case remains the owner of the plant, the first major event it will host is already practically certain.

It’s about the Paralympic fencing world championship which, barring changes to the international calendar, has already been fixed from 3 to 8 October 2023. It will once again be organized by the Terni Fencing Clubwhich already made a good impression 4 years ago when it hosted the Europeans, always Paralympic, at the De Santis table tennis arena.

Among the other events of national and international appeal scheduled for next year, we should also mention the Memorial D’Aloja of rowing, for motorcycling the Enduro championship and the Moto Tripfor running the Valentine’s Marathonin addition to the various national table tennis and archery events.
