There are 338 designated intractable diseases by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. The 97th disease is ulcerative colitis. According to the website of the Intractable Diseases Information Center, “ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease of the large intestine in which erosions and ulcers occur in the mucous membrane (innermost layer) of the large intestine,” and the symptoms are “diarrhea with or without bloody stools, which often occurs. Abdominal pain.” The number of patients is estimated to be about 100 per 100,000 population.

Wasp sting reveals intractable disease

The pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis is still unclear. Tanaka tried drug treatment, but the recovery was unsatisfactory, and in October he underwent a total colonectomy. He was hospitalized for three months and lost 11 kg of weight, but in the spring of his fourth year, he returned to action.
