Seven Spaniards, for the Canadian International Championship

Spanish badminton faces a new international challenge, this time in the Canadian International Championship that will take place this Tuesday in Toronto. The national delegation that competes on Canadian soil is headed by technical director Arturo Ruiz and competes in all five tests.

Pablo Abián and Kike Peñalver compete in the men’s singles. The man from Bilbao is the first to enter the scene this Tuesday, against the German Samuel Hsiao, while Peñalver, who has just won the Maldives International and won silver in the Peru Challenge, will debut on Wednesday against the Canadian Ethan Ao Jun Chan who comes from the previous phase.

In the women’s singles, the Spanish representation is made up of Clara Azurmendi, who returns to the competition after winning silver in the Peru Challenge. Also taking part in this event is Ania Setién, who has won four medals in the last two tournaments and who will debut in Canada against local player Katie Lau.

In men’s doubles, the Catalan duo of Joan Monroy and Carlos Piris participate, who have achieved three consecutive bronzes in the Mexican International, in the Ibero-American Championship and in El Salvador International. The Spanish tandem debuts in Toronto against the Canadians Yufei Zhai and Toby Zhang.

In women’s doubles, Spain has Clara Azurmendi and Bea Corrales, who start as first seeds. The Gipuzkoan and the Madrid will enter the scene in the second round, facing the locals Emma Meng and Ashley Wong.

The mixed doubles is another test that can give good results to Spanish badminton, since the couple formed by Ania Setién and Joan Monroy is shining brightly: they won gold in El Salvador and bronze in the Ibero-American Championship. Monroy and Setién’s first rivals will also be Canadians, Jett Ko and Joanna Xu.
