Quick exit at Jerusalem Masters

Rostock judoka Annika Würfel unluckily loses in round 1

The Jerusalem Masters is the overall second most important judo event of the World Federation (IJF) after the World Championships. An award for those who are chosen among the elustrous circle of participants. Only the top 36 judoka in the world rankings are eligible to compete in each weight class. It was the case for a Rostock resident. The current bronze medalist at the U23 European Championships, Annika Würfel (world ranking 32), started on Tuesday in the 11,000-seat Pais Arena. Together with her national teammate Mascha Ballhaus (Turnerbund Hamburg-Eilbeck) in the weight class up to 52 kg.

Started with big goals, the tournament for dice was unfortunately over quickly. In round one, the sports soldier lost to Binta Ndiaye from Switzerland in extra time at the hands of Ko-uchi-gari. A waza-ari in the third minute was previously denied her. Teammate Ballhaus had little more success. After winning the opening battle came for the native Glindenerin
out in the second round. The winner in the -52 kg class was the 27-year-old Kosovar Distria Krasniqi.

All in all, the tournament, which has continued to this day, has been very sobering for the German Judo Federation. Unfortunately, with five men and new women on site, none of the athletes made it past the second round.

Irrespective of the final result in Jerusalem, VfK “Bau” Rostock 94 eV, Wuerfel’s home club, celebrates its athlete. In advance he wrote on his Facebook account: “We are always proud to have a judoka on the IJF world stage with Annika.” That should give the 22-year-old the necessary self-confidence for the next event. The IJF World Tour continues in 36 days. The 2023 Portuguese Grand Prix will take place in Almanda from January 27th to 29th.
