Prato, Scarselli: “The city is big, it can become so in sport”

The Christmas break is the right occasion to take stock of the progress of the Prato Dragons basketball thanks to the availability of the sports director Stephen Scarselli.

It is a pleasure to exchange some reflections.

“I like to talk little. They are just the opposite of protagonism. Indeed, I usually speak when there are problems…”

Should we worry?

“Not at all. Our results, in terms of standings, sponsors, young people, speak for themselves but there’s one thing on my mind these days”.

Tell us a little.

“Prato teaches everyone the culture of work, teaches us to live together and collaborate. Prato is really a big city: big in numbers, big in industry. He’s not big on sports.”

Is it a criticism/self-criticism?

“It’s a fact. Lawn is big but it still doesn’t have a sports movement to match it. Having said that, the prospects are encouraging, the positive effects for the whole city are evident, but something is still missing”.

Suitable plants?

“I understand that there are many problems, especially today, but when to replace that broken basket which cost us the playoffs conquered on the field it takes five months something is wrong…”

Is there no progress?

“We are at point zero. Toscanini is unsuitable today and if we continue like this we will necessarily have to move. We cannot fail to host fans of other teams; we cannot promote the values of sport and not welcome those who legitimately want to follow their favorite team away from home; it’s certainly not our fault but it’s unsportsmanlike. We just ask a home more than just for us for all of town basketball because I hope we can continue to grow together. However, just that would not be enough to make the leap forward. It would be a starting point on which to build something more”.

Explain better…

“Here in Prato we are missing a good derby, between two Prato teams, with many Prato players, built and launched at home. A challenge that is talked about 7 days before and 7 after, with attached ironies, a derby that can attract media e sponsor. Obviously in a packed sports hall”.

Have you had fair and understandable recriminations, do you also have a proposal?

“I try and I limit myself to plausible solutions and not phantasmagorical. I went to see the Livorno derby: they play there in a building 8000 seats. Nothing extraordinary but perfectly functional. We are available to contribute to a path in this sense, in the interest of the Dragons and of the whole city, e I hope the other companies from Prato will also want to participate”.

Is it an outstretched hand?

“If we want to grow we have to take steps together, not all in random order. I know we’re not used to thinking like this but if we don’t change our approach and attitude, we have little hope of aiming for high levels”.
