Pelé receives honors in the Spanish, French and Portuguese Championships

The world was mobilized with the death of King Pelé, aged 82, this Thursday. La Liga, from Spain, and Ligue 1, from France, respected a minute of silence in honor of the three-time World Cup champion for Brazil, before the ball rolled.

Before the game between Sporting and Paços de Ferreira, for the Portuguese Championship, the teams also respected the moment.

Players from Atlético de Madrid and Elche paid tribute to Pelé, before the game for the 15th round of the Spanish Championship, the first after the World Cup dispute.

“LaLiga and the RFEF have agreed to a moment of silence to show their condolences for the death of Edson Arantes do Nascimento ‘Pelé’,” La Liga said in a statement.

“As a sign of respect, a minute of silence will be observed in all the remaining matches of the 15th round of LaLiga Santander. Professional football thus joins the expressions of grief and mourning for the death of one of the great players in history”, continued the communicated.

Only the two games that took place before the announcement of Pelé’s death did not follow the same protocol. Seven more matches will be played for the 15th round of Espanyol, including games between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Ligue 1, from France, also mobilizes

In France, the Premier League also said it would pay tributes ahead of Round 16 matches. “A tribute to King Pelé will be made shortly before the start of tonight’s Ligue 1 games,” Ligue 1 announced.

Before the ball rolled to Olympique de Marseille and Toulouse at the Vélodrome stadium, players from both teams also observed a minute’s silence. After the final whistle, the Marseille team got the better of it, winning by 6 to 1. The French round, in turn, ended this Thursday.
