About the prize

The choice of the Pehuén as a symbol for the recognition of Neuquén athletes who stand out in various fields arose a long time ago. One of its ideologues was Osvaldo Arabarco, who at that time served as secretary of the Circle of Journalists of the Alto Valle de Río Negro and Neuquén, whose presidency was held by Ángel Cinquegrani, better known as “Tito” Herrera.

Said institution together with the Circle of Sports Journalists and other organizations met annually to reward those who stood out in sports, science, culture, etc. The dynamics of the city led to the interruption of that party that was resumed with the advent of democracy, but without the intervention of journalism.

It was not until 1992, when the Circle of Sports Journalists was formed again, that President-elect Carlos Quinteros revived, together with the Undersecretaries of Sports and Culture, the story with journalists choosing outstanding athletes.
