Official: Bruguera is no longer captain and Ferrer is the favorite

The Royal Spanish Tennis Federation made official today the goodbye to Sergi Bruguera as Spanish Davis Cup captain, just as AS advanced days ago. By “mutual agreement” the Barcelonan and the RFET separate their paths. Bruguera’s technical relationship with Alexander Zverev, a rival of the Spanish tennis players on the circuit and hypothetically in the competition by country, had already opened a gap who has ended his dismissal after having achieved the sixth Salad Bowl for Spain (2019) from the bench.

The RFET wants to announce his replacement before the end of the year. And, as AS has learned from federal sources, the candidates are reduced to two: David Ferrer and Feliciano López. Javier Soler, technical director, will be seen this week with the one from Jávea, number one option for the players (who are the ones who ultimately decide), and only high economic claims could stop their incorporation. Spain, with an invitation to the final phase, would play a week in September and if they qualified for the Finals, these would be from November 21 to 26 in Malaga. A very punctual job, unlike the one carried out by the Federation Cup captain, Anabel Medina, involved in sports work all year round.

Ferrer (40 years old), three times champion of the competition, He has served this year as director of the Finals for Kosmos, Gerard Piqué’s company that co-organizes the Davis Federation with the International Federation. Publicly, he already expressed in Malaga his desire to one day occupy the captaincy. His manager during his career, Albert Molina, is also the manager of Carlos Alcaraz, the player on whom the national team should revolve with Rafa Nadal already away from Davis, and their relationship is excellent.

Feliciano López (41 years old) has been champion five times and has not announced his retirement, although in 2020 he has only played 11 games on the circuit and has dropped to 830th place in the ranking. He is the director of the Mutua Madrid Open. It is the option in the chamber.
