Mourning in Gijón basketball for the loss of Álvaro Ruiz de Huidobro

Mourning in Gijón basketball for the death yesterday at the age of 89 of Álvaro Ruiz de Huidobro Lobo, who went through several teams in the city in different positions and became president of the Asturian Federation of basket sport for six years. Born in Avilés, he was married to María Teresa Vega. He had a son, Álvaro Ruiz de Huidobro Vega, and two brothers, Rosario and Víctor, now deceased. His funeral will be today in San Pedro at 1:00 p.m.

Although he was born in Villa del Adelantado, he spent practically all his life in Gijón. First, he lived in Somió and the last years of his life he lived in the center of the city, on Instituto street. “My father has been considered a gentleman. He was elegant, cordial and always had a smile,” his son explained yesterday. He was closely linked to sports throughout his life, especially basketball. He was a player in the Covadonga Group and later a coach at the La Inmaculada school and at the Labor University. Businessman and engineer, he became president of the Asturian Federation between 1986 and 1992. Golf was another of his passions. He was president of the Competition Committee of the Castiello Golf Club during the presidency of Jorge Burgaleta.
