Mick Schumacher and Ferrari decided on Thursday not to continue together after three years. The 23-year-old son of racing legend Michael Schumacher has joined Mercedes as a reserve driver.
Schumacher was included in Ferrari’s talent program at the beginning of 2019, the team in which his father became world champion five times. In 2021 and 2022 he drove for Haas in Formula 1.
Schumacher’s departure from Ferrari, which supplies Haas’ engines, is no surprise. Last month, Haas already announced that there will be no room for the German in 2023.
Shortly after his departure from Ferrari was announced, Mercedes already announced the arrival of Schumacher. He has been associated with the team of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton for some time, where he will become third driver.
“I think it’s great to be part of Mercedes. I see this as a new start,” said Schumacher. “I am happy with the confidence that Toto Wolff and everyone involved have in me. Formula 1 is such a fascinating world and you never stop learning.”
‘Mick is a talented driver’
Team boss Wolff is full of praise for the young driver. “Mick is a talented driver. He is a hard worker and very eager to learn. We also know that with two years of experience in Formula 1 he is ready to step in at short notice to replace Lewis or George if the need arises. “
Schumacher did not score a single point with Haas in his first season as a Formula 1 driver. This year he collected twelve points. He is replaced in the team by Nico Hülkenberg, who forms a couple with Kevin Magnussen.
The new Formula 1 season starts on March 5 in Bahrain. The Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort is scheduled for August 27.
