Legendary pitcher Gaylord Perry dies at 84

Gaylord Perry, whose Hall of Fame career will forever be linked to the “spitball,” died of natural causes at his home in Gaffney, South Carolina. He was 84 years old.

Perry remained active for most of his retirement, working on his farm in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. He also religiously attended various events, such as statue unveiling ceremonies, World Series ring celebrations, along with other immortals from the San Francisco Giants. But his presence at such events has become increasingly sporadic in recent years.

Perry became the first player to win a Cy Young in each league, winning the award in 1972 with Cleveland and in 1978 with San Diego. In a total of 22 career seasons, he posted a 314-265 record with a 3.11 ERA and 3,534 strikeouts. He ended up uniforming with eight teams over the course of his career: Giants, Indians, Rangers, Padres, Yankees, Braves, Mariners and Royals.

Gaylord Perry he was a workhorse and a memorable figure in his Hall of Fame career, winning 314 games and recording 3,534 strikeouts in 22 years,” said Commissioner Rob Manfred it’s a statement. “He will always be remembered as one of the greatest Giants in history, and for his stints in Cleveland and San Diego, with whom he became the first pitcher to win a Premio Cy Young in the American League and another in the National League. The five-time 20-game winner, he pitched for eight different teams and was always a beloved teammate and great friend throughout his life. From Major League BaseballI extend my deepest condolences to Gaylord’s family, friends and fans of our great game.”

Hard work characterized Perry throughout his career. The pitcher was particularly proud of having completed 303 games in 690 starts. The right-hander rose in the second part of the 1960s, when the starter was expected to cover all nine innings.

“If you didn’t pitch nine innings,” Perry said, “you might not start again.”
