Football – Gvardiol on mistakes: “Part of growing up” – Sport

Doha (dpa) – Croatia’s defender Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig has apparently processed the lost World Cup semi-final against Argentina and his own mistake at 0: 3 well. “It’s part of growing up,” said the 20-year-old at a press conference at the Croatian training ground in Doha.

Gvardiol was partly to blame for Argentina’s second goal and, with tears in his eyes, had to be comforted by his team-mate Marko Livaja after the final whistle. “Marko said to me: You are young, this is your first World Cup and there will be more to come,” said the Leipzig native and added. “I don’t know if there is a player who doesn’t make mistakes – especially in the central defender’s position. It’s part of the sport. I try to make as few mistakes as possible. But there will always be some.”

Despite his blunder against Argentina, Gvardiol is one of the best defenders at the World Cup. Premier League clubs Manchester City and Chelsea are said to have a strong interest in him. When asked if he would be happy about an award as the best young player of the tournament, the RB professional replied: “That would be nice, but I would prefer to win the bronze medal.” On Saturday (4 p.m. / Magenta TV) the Croatians will meet Morocco in the game for third place.

Gvardiol went into the semifinals against Argentina with a foot injury and, according to coach Zlatko Dalic, had to be given injections specifically for those important 90 minutes. However, before the game for the bronze medal, Gvardiol gave the all-clear on Thursday: “It’s gotten better. We still have time to work on it today and tomorrow. I think I’ll be healthy and will be in the squad.”
