Triple winner of the World Cup, the Brazilian was admitted to a palliative care service, the chemotherapy no longer having the expected effects on his colon cancer, the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo reported on Saturday.

Adapted treatment

The medical report released on Friday indicated that he was responding well to antibiotic treatment and that his condition was improving. According to Folha de S. Paulo, the former footballer’s chemotherapy treatment was interrupted and he was transferred to palliative care, where he is only treated for pain and breathing difficulties.

Pelé underwent surgery for a colon tumor in September 2021 and has since been followed in hospital. He posted on his Instagram account Thursday that he had been hospitalized for his “monthly checkup” and thanked his fans for worrying about his health.

His manager and Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo did not immediately respond to requests from Reuters.
