Ferrer at the head of La Roja

A few days after the departure of Sergi Bruguera, David Ferrer was named captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team for the next three seasons.

Spain will not be long without a Davis Cup captain. A few days after the announcement of Sergi Brugera’s departure after five seasons at the helm of La Roja and a victory in 2019 in Madrid, it was the big favorite, David Ferrer, who was named captain for the next three seasons. The 40-year-old former tennis player knows the event perfectly, having won it in 2008, 2009 and 2011. He is also since the beginning of this year the director of the final stages of the Davis Cup, organized by the Kosmos group, and will keep his post.

Retired since 2019, David Ferrer was later appointed as Barcelona’s clay-court tournament director. At the end of 2020, he also coached Alexander Zverev, but the adventure only lasted three months (it is now Bruguera who trains him). During his great career, which began in 2000 and which saw him win 27 tournaments and play in the Roland-Garros final in 2013 (defeat against Rafael Nadal), David Ferrer played 33 Davis Cup matches, for a record of 28 wins and 5 losses.

Objective victory for Spain

At the head of the Spanish team, the Valencian will have no other objective than the final victory. With two Spaniards ranked in the two best ranks in the world, La Roja dreams of winning back the Saladier d’Argent. Provided, of course, that Carlos Alcaraz is finally rid of his physical problems (covid in 2021 and an abdominal injury in 2022 deprived him of the final phase), and that Rafael Nadal is motivated to play the competition a new time.

With no less than ten players ranked in the ATP Top 100 in singles, Spain has a huge reservoir anyway (Carreno Busta, Bautista Agut, Davidovich Fokina…), and Marcel Granollers is a solid 17th player in the world in double. David Ferrer’s team will in any case be exempt from qualifying in February, since they have received an invitation to play directly in the group stage in September.
