FC Barcelona furious after Lewandowski’s final suspension: ‘Catalans go to sports tribunal’ | football world cup

Robert Lewandowski can look forward to an extra long holiday after his country’s elimination at the World Cup against France. The Spanish football association RFEF has definitively suspended the 34-year-old attacker from FC Barcelona for three competition matches. The association rejected an appeal from the Spanish leader on Monday and upheld the sentence imposed two weeks ago.

Lewandowski received two yellow cards within half an hour in the last league match before the World Cup against Osasuna a month ago. On leaving the field, he touched his nose, which was seen as “contempt and disrespect to the referee.” The striker later stated that the gesture was intended for trainer Xavi and not for the referee.

FC Barcelona has reportedly now reacted ‘furious’ to the enforcement of the penalty, reports RAC. The Catalan radio station even says it knows that Barça will go to the international sports tribunal CAS to challenge the sentence. According to Spanish disciplinary law, Barcelona has three weeks to actually make this unusual course for clubs.

Lewandowski, who is the top scorer in the Spanish league with thirteen goals, will miss the games against Espanyol, Atlético Madrid and Getafe after the resumption of La Liga. Leader Barcelona has a lead of 2 points over closest attacker Real Madrid.

The Polish striker scored his first two World Cup goals at the World Cup in Qatar. In the group stage, Lewandowski scored against Saudi Arabia and in the round of 16, the Barça striker used a penalty against France in two instances. It was only an honorary goal in the game that was lost 3-1, meaning a World Cup exit.
