Erdoğan: Ronaldo was benched because he supports Palestine

Istanbul

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey, spoke about Cristiano Ronaldo’s situation at the 2022 World Cup. CR7 was put on the bench a lot because he supported Palestine.

Reported by the Turkish news agency Anadolu Agency, Erdogan said Ronaldo was the target of a ‘political ban’ at the 2022 World Cup. This is because the 37-year-old player is said to be a figure who supports Palestine. While outside the arena, some supporters were also seen busy boycotting Israel.

Erdoğan said that Ronaldo was put on the bench a lot so that he was psychologically disturbed. Throughout the 2022 World Cup, Ronaldo was backed up by coach Fernando Santos in the knockout phase, against Switzerland and Morocco.

“They have wasted Ronaldo. Unfortunately, they imposed a political ban on him,” Erdogan said, at an event in the eastern province of Erzurum.

“Sending a footballer like Ronaldo onto the pitch with only 30 minutes left before the game damages his psychology and takes away his energy.”

“Ronaldo is someone who stands for the Palestinian cause,” Erdogan added.

The issue of Palestine has strengthened rapidly in the 2022 World Cup. Morocco, for example, where its supporters intensively waved the Palestinian flag when Hakim Ziyech et al won, where Morocco was able to reach the semifinals.

The 2022 World Cup itself is full of political issues. Starting from the prohibition of LGBT, which angered several European countries, to human rights issues that motivated Qatar to become the host.

Qatar itself is trying to stick with it by banning LGBT free expression at the 2022 World Cup. Several attributes were banned from circulating, even banning the use of the captain’s armband by players in matches.

FIFA itself can not do much about the ban. Even so, the tournament continued even though the pros and cons continued to flow.

Then, human rights issues related to Qatari immigrant workers were also widely highlighted before the 2022 World Cup. There are many reports that Qatar employs many migrant workers in an inadequate manner, even causing many fatalities.
