Davis-Cup

Austria will contest the Davis Cup duel with Croatia in Rijeka at the beginning of February next year. The Austrian Tennis Association (ÖTV) reported on Wednesday. In the qualifying round for the final tournament in 2023, the Croatians are top seeded.

As ÖTV captain Jürgen Melzer noted in a broadcast, Rot-Weiss-Rot can probably fall back on Dominic Thiem’s strongest squad. The game is played on hard court. “I had positive conversations with all the players. And it looks like I can draw on unlimited resources,” said Melzer.

The extended squad with Thiem (ATP-102nd), Jurij Rodionov (122nd), Filip Misolic (149th), Dennis Novak (180th) and the double specialists Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler are standing. “We will still wait for the first weeks of the tournament in the new year, but if nothing incredible happens, five of the six players named will ultimately be nominated,” explained Melzer.

Austria needs its strongest squad

Austria only has a real chance of winning on hard court if the guests can fall back on the strongest squad, according to the ex-professional. Croatia relies on its top players Marin Cilic (ATP-17th) and Borna Coric (26th). In Rijeka, in the Zamet Sports Center, games will be played on February 4th and 5th. The capacity of the hall is 2,450 visitors.
