2023 is an important year for Korean badminton to go beyond winning medals at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and prepare for the 2024 Paris Olympics. This is why attention is focused on who will be named in the national team next year.

The Korea Badminton Association will open the ‘2023 National Team Selection’ at the Dangjin Gymnasium in Chungcheongnam-do from the 23rd. 16th in world rankings in singles and 8th in world rankings in doubles, Ahn Se-young (Samsung Life Insurance) in women’s singles, Kim So-young, Shin Seung-chan, Lee So-hee (above Incheon International Airport) in women’s doubles, Gong Hee-yong (Jeonbuk Bank), mixed doubles Seo Seung-jae (Korea Armed Forces Sports Corps) and Chae Yoo-jung (Incheon International Airport) of <#101> will wear the Taegeuk mark next year as well.

24 players each in men’s singles, women’s singles, and women’s doubles, and 28 players in men’s doubles challenged for this selection, which will be held as a three-set match. Including the automatically selected players, we plan to select 8 players each for men’s and women’s singles and 11 players each for doubles.

Both the men’s singles and women’s singles are divided into three groups to compete in the full league. Up to 2nd place in each group will earn the Taegeuk mark, and men can compete for 2nd place in a face-to-face match between 3rd place in each group, and women can get on the national team up to 1st place in a match between 3rd place in each group. For doubles, groups are randomly drawn and assigned on site, and then men play 27 matches and women play 23 matches. Evaluation items include not only grades, but also partnerships and game attitude.

The main concern of this selection match is the competitiveness of the men’s national team and the gap between the main and non-main teams of the women’s national team. In the case of the men’s national team, there is no automatic selection, and the singles player base is not thick enough to compete in major international competitions by Heo Kwang-hee (Samsung Life Insurance) alone this year. The association is looking forward to discovering a new face in the men’s division through this selection.

In the women’s division, there are many players who have shown competitiveness on the world stage, such as Kim Ga-eun (Samsung Life Insurance) in singles, Yu-rim Lee, Kim Hye-jeong (above Samsung Life Insurance), Jeong Na-eun (Hwasun-gun Office), and Baek Ha-na (Saemaeul Geumgo) in doubles. However, there is a big difference in skill between these players and the others. The task of this selection is to check the competitiveness of the new faces through the selection.
