Clubs and politicians mourn Uwe Hupke

The committed Königswinterer Uwe Hupke died at the age of 80.

The citizens’ association VVI Ittenbach, the Judo Club Königswinter/Siebengebirge and the Königswinter voters’ initiative mourn Uwe Hupke. The longtime member of the city council, who was chairman of the civic association and the judo club until his death, died last week at the age of 80.

Hupke, who came from Pomerania and had lived in Ittenbach since 1969, was involved in the political bodies of the city of Königswinter for two decades. Until his retirement, he worked for the municipal building authority.

Since 2003 he has been active as an expert citizen and from 2006 to 2020 as a council member in local politics, from 2006 to 2013 as a member of the FDP parliamentary group and since then for the Königswinter voter initiative. Until the very end, he was a member of the building and transport committee and the works committee. “He was a local politician with heart and soul and campaigned for the people locally,” says the obituary of the Koenigswinter voters’ initiative.

The grief in the Judo Club is also great. He has practiced this sport since childhood. “Not only his sporting successes, but especially his self-sacrificing activity in club life distinguished him,” said the deputy chairman Doris Hoss-Günther. Under the direction of his training group, the club has celebrated many successes at national and international level. Hupke was also very active in promoting young talent. And thanks to his support, the club has always been able to appoint its coaches from within its own ranks.

“Uwe was a veteran to whom the sport of judo in North Rhine-Westphalia owes a lot. We will all miss him sorely,” said Hoss-Günther. With “Chefchen”, as he was nicknamed, the Judo Club has not only lost a colleague, a loving and warm person, but also a very good friend.
