Where there are stars, there are also players who fall through the basket. The French sports newspaper L’Équipe has put together a team with players who received the lowest average score for their respective position. With Yannick Carrasco, one Red Devil ‘made it’.
The Red Devils disappointed at the World Cup in Qatar by being one of the few top countries to die in the group stage. It therefore seemed inevitable that at least one Belgian would end up in one of the less positive lists of the tournament. Yannick Carrasco gets the dubious honor of being in the worst World Cup team according to L’Équipe. The French sports newspaper gave the Devils wingback an average of three for his two appearances in Qatar. In the flattering opening match against Canada, he was replaced at half-time, only to not come off the bench during Morocco’s defeat. Roberto Martínez dropped him back into the starting line-up against Croatia, but Carrasco could not help avoid the elimination.
Another notable name in the team is Andreas Skov Olsen. The Club Brugge winger was one of the main outsiders with Denmark beforehand, but the semi-finalist of the most recent European Championship did not even survive the group with France, Australia and Tunisia. Skov Olsen – although much was expected of him – could not make his mark at any time. In the first game against Tunisia, he saw a goal rightly disallowed for offside.
In addition to Carrasco and Skov Olsen, ex-Club player Krépin Diatta (Sengal) and Gareth Bale (Wales) are also in the flopel team. Striking: L’Équipe has room for no less than three Poles, although they quite surprisingly made it to the second round – albeit with anything but attractive football.
Messi in Mbappé in topelftal
In the top team of L’Équipe – with the players who received the highest average score – we find few surprises. World champion Argentina delivers three players with Lionel Messi, Marcos Acuña and top talent Enzo Fernandez. The same goes for surprise Morocco (Sofyan Amrabat, Achraf Hakimi and Romain Saïss) and number three Croatia, with old warrior Luka Modric, sensation Josko Gvardiol and wall between the posts Dominik Livakovic. Top scorer Kylian Mbappé can of course not be missed, Englishman Bukayo Saka – good for three goals – completes the team.
