While he was busy, as usual, commenting on live TV the basketball match that was being played at that moment, the man started to feel unwell: he first slumped down in his chair, then he started shaking until he was completely unconscious. All in front of the eyes of the thousands of viewers connected from home and the numerous fans present inside the arena. The only one who did not immediately understand what was happening was Dominique Wilkins, his colleague, who continued to host the program without realizing that Rathbun was having an illness.
Only when the rescuers promptly intervened did he realize the seriousness of the situation. The commentator was stabilized and then hospitalized urgently: “Before tonight’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, announcer Bob Rathbun briefly lost consciousness on the field. Emergency medical professionals at the scene quickly treated Rathbun for dehydration. It is stable, responsive and headed to Emory Midtown for further evaluation”.
