At just 22, Tyrell Terry announces his retirement

Tyrell Terry will only have played 13 games in the NBA.

American basketball player Tyrell Terry, drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in 2020, announced on Instagram on Friday that he was retiring from sports due to too much anxiety which caused him to live “the darkest moments of (his) existence».

After a brilliant college career at Stanford, Terry played only thirteen NBA games, eleven for the Mavericks and two for the Memphis Grizzlies last season. He took a long rest in his first season in Dallas for personal reasons and was released from preseason training camp last year.

The youngster cited mental health issues to explain his decision: “This message is very difficult to share and very moving to write“, he writes. “Today I decided to give up the sport that formed a big part of my identity».

«While I’ve accomplished incredible things, garnered lasting memories, and made lifelong friendships…I’ve also experienced the darkest times of my life. To the point that instead of building me up, it started tearing me down», continue Terry.

Terry now hearsexplore (his) identity outside the basketball courts” and no longer have to “wake up nauseous, having trouble breathing due to a weight on his chest».

The player, finally, apologized to those he let down, explaining that he chose a “new path that I hope will lead to happiness and allow me to love myself again».
