Ana Ivanović is currently learning German. However, she can still do very little with the Bavarian language. This leads to some unexpected problems.

Munich – Bastian Schweinsteiger is experiencing a renaissance. If the ARD expert was heavily criticized for his analyzes in the past, the ex-professional shines at the 2022 World Cup alongside moderator Esther Sedlaczek. With ex-partner Jessy Wellmer, the interaction often seemed a bit stiff before.

In private life, however, there is a completely different woman at Schweinsteiger’s side. The 38-year-old has been married to former tennis player Ana Ivanović since 2016. The couple have two sons, born in 2018 and 2019.

Luka and Leon, that’s the name of the two boys. They grow up trilingual. Because while Schweinsteiger was born in Kolbermoor in Bavaria, Ivanović comes from Serbia. The common language of the couple is therefore English.

Ana Ivanović: It’s going to be difficult with Bavarian

But when Ana or Bastian are alone with their children, they talk to the two boys in their mother tongue. Ivanović, on the other hand, is just beginning to learn German and is making progress.

Ultimately, however, it becomes difficult when a fourth “language” comes into the house. As already mentioned, Schweinsteiger comes from Kolbermoor, a small town in the Upper Bavarian foothills of the Alps. And there, part of the population, especially the older generation, still lives in the Bavarian dialect.

Even though Schweinsteiger mostly tries to speak Standard German on television, his Bavarian dialect comes through at one point or another. When the 2014 world champion is at home in Kolbermoor, High German will probably be put aside again.

It gets really difficult for Ivanović – especially when the grandparents of their two children are guests. “That’s a problem for me. I’m just beginning to understand German, and then they come to me with Bavarian,” laughs the ex-tennis player in the interview RTL from early 2022.

Ana Ivanović now lives in Kitzbühel with Bastian Schweinsteiger

By the way, Schweinsteiger is no different the other way around. When Ana talks to the children, I “sometimes sit there and don’t understand a word of what they’re saying,” said Schweinsteiger in an interview with DOES.

Despite the communication problems, the Schweinsteigers otherwise lead a tranquil life. The small family now lives in Austria in a small village near Kitzbühel. (kk)
