The National Hockey League (NHL) is reportedly considering the possibility of modifying the schedule by betting on more games between geographic rivals in order to promote rivalries.

According to the Sportico site on Thursday, the objective would be to maximize income and reduce travel. This subject has come up several times over the past few months. This calendar overhaul was not on the agenda of the last governors’ meeting in Florida, but participants reportedly talked about it in Toronto.

The same source mentioned the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames who have crossed swords three times this season. If the NHL imposes the changes, these same teams could face each other six or eight times each year according to current discussions.

The new schedule would also aim to give some respite to players who have to make long trips across North America. This would also be more attractive to TV partners, thereby increasing profits.

The idea behind this change was partially reinforced by the 2020-2021 season, which was disrupted by COVID-19. The NHL had to reshuffle the four sections, forming a division for the seven Canadian teams.
