The deportation of Guatemalans is close to pre-pandemic figures
Guatemala City, Dec 29 (EFE). Guatemala received a total of 40,633 people deported from the United States in 2022, a figure that is increasingly similar to those registered before the covid-19 pandemic detected in 2020. The Guatemalan Institute of Migration detailed this Thursday to journalists that The 40,633 mandatory returns in the last twelve months represent an increase of 128 percent compared to 2021, when 17,806 people were deported. The expansion of covid-19 in 2020 had caused the United States to decrease the number of deportees in 2020 and 2021. However, the figures for 2022 are very close to the pre-pandemic era, when the North American nation sent 54,599 migrants back to Guatemala . The last flight of deportees of the year from the United States arrived in Guatemala this Thursday and there were a total of 368 air transfers from the United States to Guatemala in 2022. ALSO FROM MEXICO The deportations of Guatemalans in 2022 also took place by the Mexican government through by air and land, for a total of 53,410 people returned compulsorily from the country headed by Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Therefore, in total from Mexico and the United States, Guatemala has received in 2022 94,123 migrants deported both by air and by land, pending the data to be counted on December 30. In 2021, the total number of deportees from the United States and Mexico was 63,304 Guatemalans, which is equivalent to an increase of 48 percent this year.
