A classic to revive against Perfumerías

Bernat Canut insists that it is “one more game, a league game”. Still, considering the past and present of women’s basketball in recent years, one Spar Girona – Avenida Perfumeries it always carries more weight, added pressure. Is the classic par excellence of the Endesa Women’s League.

Bernat Canut’s, however, do not make it to tomorrow’s duel (6:00 p.m.) at its best. After Saragossa’s stumble the previous day against Araski (63-58), the Girona team – so far, with a less contested match – had the opportunity to stand out in the middle of the very even classification and sleep leaders if they won Tuesday’s postponed game against the Barçabut they did not achieve the goal (70-67). It was the first defeat of the week, which became even heavier after the beating in the Euroleague against the DVTK (58-64). Bad mood for Girona – who, moreover, do not yet know when they will be able to count on Brittney Sykeswhich is still pending transfer by Sopron-, but which, on the other hand, can serve as an incentive to seek, in any case, victory.

“We are facing a tough week. The team is touched because we come from two defeats and without time to get up morally, rest and do good training”, confesses the coach, Bernard Canute, before the match. For this reason, he makes a special appeal to the Girona fans to get the most out of the track factor, which can be decisive: “We hope that Fontajau look unbeatable, but it’s just another league game. We want people to come and cheer on the players. We need to have support, as we have had until now”, he adds.

On the other side of the coin is theAvenida. “They had a bad start and it seems that now they are on top of everything, unlike us”, admits Canut. And it is that those of Roberto Iñíguez they have come back with the victory in the League against theStudents (74-44) and to prevail on Thursday at Sopron (53-75), reigning European champion. “A rival with a long squad awaits us. It is a great rival with good players, who repeat the national block. It is a compensated squad to compete for everything”, Bernat Canut values.

A top-level match which, in addition, will fill Fontajau with faces well known to the Girona fans, such as Julia Reisingerova or the newly incorporated one Michaela Onyenwere; as well as names proper to women’s basketball, such as Cazorla, Crevendakic or another new addition to the Salamanca staff: Bridget Carleton.

All this, in the midst of the unusual current situation of the competition: up to 7 teams tied with 7 wins and 3 losses at the top of the standings before playing matchday 11. Of course, among those 7 are both UniGirona and Perfumerías Avenida, and a win in Fontajau could be decisive. Of course, without taking your eyes off the other results of the day.
