46 medals from the London Olympics will change hands after doping tests

The International Testing Agency (ITA) has found 73 violations after repeating the doping analyzes of the 2012 London Olympic Games, affecting the distribution of medals in 46 cases, ITA announced on Monday.

The ITA reports that 2,727 samples were re-analyzed with improved methods in cases where athletes were suspected of cheating. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) began a retesting program after the Athens 2004 Games, with the ITA taking over these duties after its establishment in 2018.

“Following the results of a re-analysis, the IOC has revoked the medals awarded to 31 athletes after proven violations of anti-doping rules, and 46 medals have been awarded to their rightful winners,” reports the ITA. ITA clarifies that 22 medals will change hands in weightlifting, 18 in athletics, four in wrestling and two in canoeing.

It has already been reported that in 2018, the fourth place won by Latvian long jumper Ineta Radevičas at the London Games was canceled after doping was detected. Radevich finished just a centimeter behind bronze medalist Janey DeLoach of the United States in London, but repeated tests revealed traces of the anabolic steroid oxandrolone.
