The Argentine cup final between Boca Juniors and Racing Club ended on Sunday evening (local time) with only half of the field players. World Cup referee Facundo Tello drew ten red cards during the heated duel.
After regular time, Boca Juniors and Racing Club were still in balance (1-1). Racing Club’s Carlos Alcaraz scored the winning goal just before the end of extra time and decided to celebrate his goal extensively in front of the blue-yellow box of Boca Juniors.
The Boca players made it clear to Alcaraz that they were not pleased, after which a riot ensued. Argentine referee Tello, who will be active at the World Cup in Qatar, then sent seven players away.
At the start of extra time, three other players had already seen red. Seven players from Boca Juniors (including two players on the bench) were shown red and three players from Racing were sent off. Alcaraz was one of the players who was sent off.
Boca attacker Dario Benedetto received the tenth red card in the tenth minute of the injury time of the second extension on the advice of the VAR. The game then had to be ended because Boca was no longer on the field with the minimum of seven players.
Boca had opened the score after twenty minutes via Norberto Briasco. Matías Rojas tied the score three minutes later. Alcaraz scored his winning goal two minutes before the end of extra time.
