Why the yards record is misleading

Football star Tom Brady has set another record. But it is a good example of why records in US sports should not always be trusted. The quarterback himself is about something completely different anyway.

Mith the records in American sports, that’s a thing. After almost every matchday, new ones are announced, for this and that and for this and that. What significance do they actually have? That’s debatable. The latest best performance by football star Tom Brady, who was the first quarterback to reach 100,000 pass yards on Monday night, is a good example of this. Because it shows that some records are best set if you stick with them long enough.

Many of the most common rating categories, not only in the National Football League (NFL), refer to an overall career performance, they do not establish any relation, no classification in the current season. Of course there are also such record lists, but when we talked about players like Tom Brady, Sidney Crosby (ice hockey) or LeBron James (basketball) in the past few years, it was often only about values like: most touchdowns, most points, the most missions. The fact that the Pittsburgh Penguins (Crosby) and Los Angeles Lakers (James) are currently at the bottom end of their respective leagues and that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ season so far has been rather suboptimal seems secondary.
