«We are playing cinema, we can ascend, although we must not rush»

The agreement with Athletic ends next year, but the rojiblanco club is happy and will continue in the future with the Basauri subsidiary

After spending forty-seven years as director of CD Basconia and

sixteen years as president of the Basauri institution, it might seem that Juan Ignacio Azurmendi is not surprised at all. But on the contrary, he continues to enjoy a lot from a club to which he has dedicated his whole life and from which he does not miss a game. He enjoys in the stands.

– They are third with 15 points. Will you be happy?

– Yes. We have had a small setback that has affected us in the standings when we drew in Azkoitia against Lagun Ona and lost in Ondarroa. Aurrera was last, but a very complicated game turned out for us, they started to give it up, we couldn’t catch the ball, when we did they took it away from us. The rest is fine. We have beaten Vitoria, we are the only team that has tied with Barakaldo and even more so in their field. The result is there.

– On Sunday they have to travel to Vitoria against San Ignacio.

-The team is in good spirits. The kids are phenomenal, it’s a very interesting group, good footballers and good people with the coaches at the helm.

– They are one point away from Leioa. They can be placed as seconds at any time.

– We have to have enthusiasm and confidence in what we can do. It is a very young team, but it has a lot of quality. Sometimes they make mistakes, but you have to keep in mind that there are 17-year-old second-year youth players. Possibly the youngest team in the Third Division in all of Spain.

– Has it cost less this year to put the gear into operation and unite the team?

– We have started a phenomenal season, we are very excited and happy with what we are doing, people come to Artunduaga and have fun, they applaud the team a lot because they play well and that is the important thing.

– They are a subsidiary of Athletic, what is important is training?

– Yes of course. We have signed an agreement in this sense, however, if the training can be combined with improving in the categories, then look. If Bilbao Athletic goes up to Second and we go to Second RFEF, it would be different, we would compete with more experienced athletes, although it is true that there are theories for everything. There are people who see it as more appropriate for them to grow without pressure and without veterans around because the player has to compete in his age line. The truth is that we are playing cinema.

for long

– The agreement with Athletic expires next year.

– Yes, it is theoretically the last one, but things are going to move forward. It depends on the Athletic directives, but what they have transmitted to us is that they are super happy with what we do for that team and they give us guarantees that they want to continue.

– What goal do you set for this year?

– Formation and play the playoff, finish in the top five. This year it is with the teams from here, it is viable, that is what we are doing. If things go well, we could move up. There are 16 teams and we can fight it. We shouldn’t rush, it’s a game and it includes many things, injuries, the trajectory of the players, etc., but of course we have full enthusiasm.

– Are the victories being translated into partners?

– It is complicated because Athletic absorbs all the football in Greater Bilbao, but we are a nice group made up of half a thousand people who support each other. We would like to reach a thousand members like Barakaldo, it would be impressive, but for now we defend ourselves.
