Belgian football is in crisis. After Standard and Ghent, fireworks flew onto the turf in Charleroi last weekend. Torches were burning in the stands in Anderlecht. Each time to the dissatisfaction of the majority of the stadium, because the troublemakers are only a few dozen, at most hundreds. They call themselves Ultras. “Children who think they are the boss and don’t let anyone teach them to,” it sounds within hard cores. “The camaraderie and the hierarchy make these groups popular with people who cannot find their way in society,” says football expert Evert Winkelmans. But how do you keep them in line? “At least not by having Lorin Parys or Annelies Verlinden draw up an action plan, that’s bullshit.”
