On Monday, the Portuguese Football Association announced in a press release that Liverpool youngster Fábio Carvalho (20) would no longer play for the Portugal U21 national team. The central midfielder reported this himself via text message (!).

The Portuguese Football Association announced in three compact sentences: “The footballer has decided not to play for the Portuguese U21 national team anymore. Fábio Carvalho has texted the Portuguese Football Federation that he will no longer play for the Portugal U21 national team. The player’s decision was communicated after the squad for the pre-season games against the Czech Republic and Japan was known.”
Carvalho was actually nominated for the upcoming international matches. But he is not participating in these now. So far he has played four games (two goals) for Portugal U21.

In the current season he was also able to show himself at Liverpool in the Premier League and Champions League (14 games, two goals). Among other things, he scored the much-celebrated winning goal in added time in the 2-1 win against Newcastle. In the summer he switched from Fulham to Liverpool for around six million euros.
There is no official reason for Carvalho’s withdrawal from the Portugal U21 national team. However, the British media are speculating that the English FA can now regain hope that Carvalho will choose him.
Carvalho had played for England’s Under-15s, Under-16s, Under-17s and Under-18s in his youth. In total, he made 29 appearances for the England U-national teams. Is it coming back now?
