TSV Abensberg is German men’s judo team champion for the 23rd time. The defending champion and record champion beat the Hamburg judo team 9-5 on Saturday evening in the Wandsbek sports hall in Hamburg.

After a balanced first round, TSV pulled away in round two of the Bundesliga final and, after 2019 and 2021, secured their third title in four years.

Department head Martin Oberndorfer was bubbling over with joy: “It’s crazy. We weren’t the favourites, but we knew we definitely had a chance. Even if the first round was tight, we have already seen that our tactical route can work.” But he “didn’t have dared to dream that it would be such a clear result in the end.

4:3 do the first round

After the first round, TSV Abensberg was 4:3 ahead after wins by Falk Petersilka, Roy Meyer, Luka Maisuradze and Lukas Vennekold. Yerrick Schriever, Moritz Plafky and Tofig Mammadov had fought for the points for Hamburg. Bayern pulled away in round two and made it 9-5 with victories from Falk Petersilka, Nikolas Menzl, Roy Meyer, Vazha Margvelashvili and Johann Lenz. Moritz Plafky and Dominic Ressel scored points on the Hamburg side.

Cheers in a shattered voice

It was all close fights, a solid team effort,” said Oberndorfer shortly after the final in a shaky voice that barely drowned out the shouts in the background “German champion is only for TSV”.

In the semi-finals, the four-time champion Hamburg eliminated the Judo-Club Leipzig 10:4, Abensberg also defeated the Witten-Annen sports union 10:4.
