Traditional club VfK Schifferstadt is withdrawing its team from the 2nd Bundesliga wrestling with immediate effect for financial reasons.

The first team, which also includes two-time Olympic bronze medalist Denis Kudla, has been officially canceled, the traditional club said. The decisive factor for the decision was the non-fulfillment of some promises from sponsors, which should have ensured the competition. It is not yet known what the exact consequences of this withdrawal will be for VfK.

Schifferstadt is one of the best-known wrestling locations in Germany. The most famous athlete in VfK history is Wilfried Dietrich, who died in 1992, the “Crane of Schifferstadt” and Olympic champion of 1960. The people from the Palatinate have had to struggle with financial problems in the past. The current club was founded in 2007 as the successor to the club that went bankrupt in 2006.
