Trade unions are furious with Echo in Houthalen-Helchteren: “First dismiss everyone and then continue production”

Echo, which makes concrete vaults for the construction industry, has been in trouble for years. In a first restructuring in 2013, 130 employees were made redundant. Two years ago, the management announced a new downsizing. Negotiations and a social plan followed, 25 workers were fired. Shortly afterwards, the management again needed more staff, 2 ex-employees were given a temporary contract and 10 Polish workers were brought in via a subcontractor. At the beginning of this year things seemed to be heading in the wrong direction again, and this was confirmed during a special works council on 18 August. The management announced its intention to close. Negotiations between the management and the unions started again, which led to a new social plan on 13 October. On November 3, the 51 remaining staff were laid off.
