The Judo Federation argues that the regulations prevented the girl from competing because of her weight

The Asturian Federation of Judo and Associated Sports confirms that the young woman from Langreo «could not participate in the Villa de Avilés tournament for failing to comply with the rules of the International Judo Federation that establishes weight ranges, and all athletes, whether male or female , must be subject to these parameters’. They emphasize that “neither the European Federation, nor the Spanish, nor the Asturian, nor the Avilés Judo Club, organizer, can alter anything.”

They reject what was said by the girl’s mother, to whom they ask for a rectification, which pointed out that she had been prevented from participating for “exceeding a kilo in weight, inferring that there was discriminatory and sexist treatment.” The Federation affirms that saying that «the overweight was produced by the circumstance of the judoka having her period during the night, having given the weight in the informal weigh-in, and not in the official one. The reality is that, between both weigh-ins, there were only three hours, and they were carried out on the same day. “This competitor never gave the weight, and therefore, she could not compete,” they assert. Something that supports the girl’s club.

The organization highlights that “1,650 athletes showed up, and that, except in this case, all gave weight.” For this reason, they consider that “having allowed it would have been a comparative offense with the rivals who arrived at the event under the parameters required for the category and in no case should this reality be mixed with a situation of machismo.”
