The day Wawrinka argued with Federer: “Luckily there were no cameras…”

Stan Wawrinka has revealed in recent days how it was the day he had a discussion with Roger Federer. In an interview on the RMC Court No. 1 podcast, ‘Stan The Man’ recalled the episode that took place during the 2014 ATP Finals with his great friend, with whom he won gold in doubles at the Beijing Olympics 2008.

According to Wawrinka, the discussion came about because from the stands, Federer’s wife, Mirka Vavrinec, kept yelling at him throughout the match: “Cry, baby.”

A phrase that Wawrinka has already denounced that he also had to endure during the Wimbedon tournament. “He did the same thing at Wimbledon. Every time I’m on his side he yells at me before he serves. It is unbearable”.

Wawrinka confirmed that there was a lot of tension between him and Federer in the locker room tunnel after the match. “There was a lot of tension after the game. Fortunately there were no cameras in the corridors or locker rooms back then. It was a critical and very difficult moment. It was a difficult situation to handle for both of us.”

However, a few days later Wawrinka and Federer put aside their differences to join forces for the Davis Cup final, in which Switzerland won the first title in its history after beating France 3-1 in the final.

Wawrinka also spoke about Federer’s withdrawal, at a very tough time for him. “I cried because of Federer’s withdrawal. It was a hard moment, with many feelings, and it is difficult to talk about it. When I got to the circuit, he was already here. He was like an older brother to me, a friend. If I didn’t have the feeling that I can beat the best, I would have retired too. But I want to be competitive and I keep playing because I want to experience the games and the great challenges”.
