The understudy of Manuel Neuer, again untouchable with the Mannschaft, experiences a setback.

Marc Andre Ter Stegen was among Hansi Flick’s 26-man roster for the competition in Qatar, alongside fellow players Manuel Neuer and Kevin Trapp. However, the German Federation (DFB) have released a statement confirming that Ter Stegen will stay in Germany due to a gastrointestinal infection.

Ter Stegen, not the first choice

The 30-year-old will not travel with the Flick players until their warm-up friendly against Oman in Muscat on November 16. According to information from AS Diary, Ter Stegen’s setback does not rule him out of the World Cup, but precautions are taken. He will fly straight to Qatar to rejoin the team, when fully recovered, ahead of the Group E opener against Japan on November 23 at Al Rayyan. Ter Stegen is unlikely to be Flick’s first choice in Qatar as Neuer has started in 10 of Germany’s last 16 matches.
