The German supermarket chain REWE immediately pulls the plug on a sponsorship deal with the German national team, because of the controversy surrounding the captain’s armbands at the World Cup in Qatar. “FIFA’s outrageous position is totally unacceptable,” it said in a press release.

The rainbow bands are the last straw, but earlier statements by FIFA president Gianni Infantino also fell badly with REWE CEO Lionel Souque. FIFA’s outrageous stance is totally unacceptable to me as a CEO of a diverse company and as a football fan.

REWE has approximately 3,700 supermarkets in Germany and employs more than 160,000 people.
