PV Sindhu withdraws from BWF World Tour season finale

Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu has withdrawn from the BWF World Tour season finale as she has yet to fully recover from a stress fracture in her left ankle.

2018 champion Sindhu was injured on her way to winning the Commonwealth Games title in August.

The BWF World Tour Finals will be held in Guangzhou, China from December 14.

“Her doctor advised her to take a bit more time to fully recover before the new season. She discussed the pros and cons but with so many restrictions in Guangzhou and keeping the new season in mind, she made this decision,” Sindhu’s father, PV Ramana, told PTI.

“She already started training a few weeks ago and by January she will be in great shape. So in view of all these reasons, she sent an email to BAI informing her of her decision.

“She will have to be at her best for next year which will have the Asian Games and also qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics, playing around 22 tournaments will be difficult so she is taking extra precautions.”

Sindhu’s withdrawal means HS Prannoy remains India’s sole representative at the prestigious tournament.

While Prannoy is ranked third in the Race to Guangzhou standings, Kidambi Srikanth also has an outside chance if he does well at the Australian Open super 300 which starts in Sydney on Tuesday.

Lakshya Sen had also withdrawn from the Australian event due to a throat infection.

COVID-19 cases have increased in Guangzhou, forcing authorities to opt for stricter restrictions.
