The sports hall at the Gotzmannschule has been closed for three years. Clubs and schools alike are now faced with a space problem.

Aubing The gym at the Gotzmann School in Aubing has not been usable for three and a half years. The heavy hailstorm in June 2019 damaged the roof and there was water damage inside. The sports facility has been closed since then. The students can switch to a second hall on the site. However, this is getting old and is not enough. For some classes, physical education lessons have to take place outdoors, complains Belinda Ettenhuber from the parents’ council.

The city had already decided in 2020 to demolish the broken hall. The school garden next to it was to be used for the construction site. The school cleared the green area in which the AG school garden had planted beds and where lessons also took place regularly. Urgently needed stands for scooters, which had already been delivered, were to be installed during the course of the construction work. But: “So far nothing has happened,” criticizes Ettenhuber.

The school garden has been fallow since then. “Everyone expected things to get going quickly.” There was also chaos at the parking facility for bicycles and scooters. “It’s no longer enough for the 420 students,” reports the parents’ councillor. The bitter point: the stands supplied should no longer be installed because they do not comply with the current DIN standard. “It’s sad that nothing has happened in years. We’ve tried everything, but nobody cares,” says Ettenhuber.

Blocking of the Gotzmannschule gym: Some sports clubs also have to move

Several sports clubs are also affected by the closure. “We had soccer training for some youth teams there and had to move to the school gymnasiums on Limesstrasse and Wiesentfelser Strasse,” says Michael Widl-Stüber from the SV Aubing board. That is not ideal because many children live near Gotzmannstrasse. But there is another reason why he hopes that a new building will soon be built in Aubing: “We are a growing club. So another hall can’t do any harm.”

In addition, the Aubinger judo department of TSV Großhadern also used the building on Gotzmannstrasse. She went to Freiham. “It’s further away for our children from the Gotzmann School and since then we’ve had a harder time recruiting new children from there,” says Andreas Deischl. But the new hall is larger and more modern. He also hopes that the club can benefit from the growth in Freiham.

At the most recent meeting of the district committee, the citizens’ association called for planning for a new building to be taken up and implemented as quickly as possible. The Department for Education and Sport (RBS) reports that the storm caused such severe damage to the building envelope and the statics that renovation would not make economic sense. Therefore, demolition is planned for 2023. “When a replacement building takes place must be decided within the framework of the necessary prioritization of measures,” says spokesman Thomas Groß.
