Mignolet and Lang only avoid disgrace for Club Brugge against Patro Eisden after extensions | Croky Cup 2022/2023

Club Brugge has escaped an uppercut in the cup. Against Stijn Stijnen’s strong Patro Eisden, the national champion needed 120 minutes to push through. Simon Mignolet prevented a quick exit against the amateur club, Noa Lang struck twice deep in overtime.

Patro Eisden – Club Brugge in a nutshell:

  • key moment: Deep in extra time the ball falls in front of Valcke’s foot. He can turn out to be Patro’s hero, but Simon Mignolet saves Club from elimination with a clever reflex.
  • Man of the Match: Noa Lang was eager throughout the match and also made the decision with 2 goals in extra time.
  • Remarkable: Lang’s goals were only his first “field goals” of the season, his only other goal being a penalty kick on August 14 in the JPL against OHL.

Mignolet keeps Club straight with crucial saves

Coach Carl Hoefkens stated in advance that he wanted to see vertical play from Club Brugge, but there was no sign of that at all when visiting first national Patro Eisden in Maasmechelen.

Club’s pace was far too slow and creativity was lacking. For example, it was almost impossible to force a real chance against the enthusiastic home team.

Hoefkens even had to take Hans Vanaken off the bench after the break, but Patro’s “healthy aggressiveness” silenced Club. The best chances were for the home side.

Mignolet first held Club right on a shot from Bamona and in extra time he was even more important. The Club goalkeeper saved his team from being eliminated with a clever reflex to substitute Valcke’s effort from close range.

Long liberated Club in the extensions

Club crawled through the eye of the needle in extra time, it finally made the difference in overtime. After a good combination, Vanaken released Noa Lang in front of goal and he finished it off coolly: 0-1.

Lang’s goal was an uppercut for a brave Patro Eisden, but with the support of the crowd, Patro crawled straight again. Club played with fire for a while, until Lang completely decided the match in the final: 0-2.

It took blood, sweat and tears, but Club is now in the 1/8th finals of the Croky Cup, thanks to Mignolet’s saves and Lang’s goals.
